This is a really good idea for you sewing peoples out there!!
All you need to make a "cheap chic" blanket is a sewing machine, transportation, and pocket change (about $5 -$15).
The first thing you need to do is make a trip to the fabric store. They have fabrics of all sorts of colors and textures. The next step, obviously, is to pick out fabric. Pick out something heavy; no cotton or flannel. Fleece is a fabric that makes a perfect fuzzy fall or winter throw. It's lightweight (but heavy enough), double -sided, and doesn't unravel, so you don't even have to sew it if you don't want to.
Once you've picked out your fabric, head over to the counter to get it cut. You'll need two yards if it's double -sided; four yards if it isn't. Two yards should be less than five dollars. Then get anything else you want to decorate your blanket with, such as ric -rac, ribbon, patches, etc. If you had to get four yards, either get ribbon or edging. (See HINT below)
If you got TWO YARDS, continue here: When you get back from the fabric store, all you need to do is thread your sewing machine and quickly stitch on any patches, ric -rac, or ribbons you have. Since this is the Childhood Memories Issue, what inspired this is a security blanket. An idea for a blanket might be to make a replica of your security blanket from when you were younger.
HINT:
If you have to sew your blanket together because it isn't double -sided, the way to do it is to fold it in half (so that the length is 2 yards each) with the good sides touching each other. Then sew only the two long sides (that now measure 2 yards each). Flip it right -side out so that it looks like a giant pillowcase. Next, take some ribbon or some edging (whichever you prefer) and position it on the blanket so that it folds over the edge equally on both sides of the unstitched edge. Make sure you sew both at the top of the ribbon and at the bottom of the ribbon. Follow the above directions to decorate, and then, TA -DA!
YOU'RE DONE!
